OBTAINING A TRAINING POST:

You will have to apply for posts in open competition. Jobs are advertised every Thursday by specialty in the Classified Section of the British Medical Journal, the latest copy of which should be available in any medical library. It can also be accessed online via: www.bmjcareers.com. All recognised posts will state in their ad: The Postgraduate Dean confirms that this placement and/or programme has the required educational and dean's approval.

For some posts you will need to request an application form and job description, others will ask you to send a CV. Check that the post is suitable for your needs. You may telephone the doctor who is currently in the post if you are not sure about this.

Remember to send in the application form and your curriculum vitae before the closing date. If you have missed the closing date then telephone to see if your application can still be accepted.

You may be short-listed and invited for interview. Do not be too disappointed if you are not, most jobs receive far more applicants than can be interviewed.

If you are invited for interview, try to give yourself time to look around and make enquiries beforehand. If you have to travel a long way, the hospital may provide overnight accommodation. Remember to apply for travel expenses.

In the interview you need to present yourself as well as possible to the panel, but remember that these are British doctors. They will appreciate clear, direct, honest answers. They may seem rather unimpressed by what you have done overseas and by who you have worked for. They will be more impressed by what you know, how you think and what plans you have made.

You will usually be told at the end of the interview if you have been successful. If you are offered a post then you may well be asked to give a firm commitment then and there. If you accept the post then you must not withdraw at a later date, so be sure that you want the job. If you have doubts then say so and ask for time or more information.

If you are unsuccessful then it is perfectly reasonable to ask to see one of the interviewing consultants to ask why you were not successful and for advice on what you can do differently to improve your prospects of obtaining a post in the future. Try to make sure that you get specific advice rather than generalisations.
