SPOUSE VISA STATUS:
There is no restriction on the employment of the spouse of a doctor in Permit-Free Training as long as that doctor has at least 12 months leave to remain in the United Kingdom.
This means that the spouse can take any medical or non-medical employment, which includes working in a medical training post without applying for Permit-Free Training. The spouse can later apply for Permit-Free Training in his or her own right, and, if this is granted the doctor originally holding Permit-Free Training can seek to switch to spouse status.
Judicious use of these arrangements will allow a married couple who are both doctors to extend their training time in the UK if necessary. It also allows a partner who has completed training to work in a non-training post, e.g. Staff Grade, with no need for a work permit, while the other partner completes training. In certain circumstances the spouse may even complete training for General Practice, which is not possible on the Permit-Free Training scheme alone.
