VISA:
You should obtain entry clearance before you leave your home country. This can be a visa, entry certificate or a letter of consent depending on your country of origin. This may be obtained from a British Embassy or High Commission and there may be a charge.
If you are coming to the UK to seek employment in a training post, to attend an interview, to take a clinical attachment or to take an examination such as PLAB or Royal College examinations, then it is likely that you would be admitted as a visitor. This will normally be for 6 months and there may be restrictions on your ability to take any form of employment. The maximum duration may be extendable in some circumstances.
As stated by the Home Office the requirements to be met by a person seeking leave to enter the United Kingdom as a visitor are that he / she:
(i) is genuinely seeking entry as a visitor for a limited period as stated by him / her, not exceeding 6 months; and
(ii) intends to leave the United Kingdom at the end of the period of the visit as stated by him / her; and
(iii) does not intend to take employment in the United Kingdom; and
(iv) does not intend to produce goods or provide services within the United Kingdom, including the selling of goods or services direct to members of the public; and
(v) does not intend to study at a maintained school; and
(vi) will maintain and accommodate him / herself and any dependants adequately out of resources available to him / her without recourse to public funds or taking employment; or will, with any dependants, be maintained and accommodated adequately by relatives or friends; and
(vii) can meet the cost of the return or onward journey.
On your arrival in the UK you will have to pass through Immigration Control. Make sure you have all your documents with you. The Immigration Officer will place an endorsement in your passport, which will tell you how long you can stay and any other additional restrictions on you.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:
The following documents will be useful in support of your visa application where applicable:
- Medical degree certificate
- Postgraduate qualification certificate
- IELTS result
- PLAB pass result
- Sponsorship letter
- Bank statements of last 6 months
- Pay slips of last 6 months
- Employment confirmation letter from current employer
- General Medical Council test place confirmation letter
- UK accommodation booking letter
- PLAB course confirmation letter
- Any special awards
SOME USEFUL POINTS:
- Check well in advance that your passport is still valid
- Ensure that you have all the relevant documents
- Present yourself professionally at visa interview
- Be truthful but tactful in your responses
- Stress that your main aim is to gain postgraduate training within your time allowance (not employment)
- Applying for a visa when you are unemployed in your country is not a good idea - Plan your timings well
- Do not give the impression that you are desperate for this visa
How we can help:
PLABWISE issue letters of confirmation for course and/or accommodation bookings, which can be presented to the Visa Officer.
We also run a sponsorship scheme (for PLAB part 2 candidates), which provides a complete package including food, accommodation and course. Doctors on this scheme are issued with sponsorship letters for visa purposes.
