JOB OPPORTUNITIES:

The information given below is liable to change with time, possibly quickly and therefore caution is necessary in the interpretation of data.

PRE-REGISTRATION HOUSE OFFICER (PRHO) POSTS:
These posts are held by doctors who have just received their medical degrees. All graduates of British medical schools are required to complete one year of satisfactory service in house officer posts before full registration can be offered by the General Medical Council (GMC).

The number of PRHO posts available in the UK is related to the number of doctors graduating from UK medical schools and opportunities are, therefore, limited.

At 30 September 2001 there were 3685 PRHOs in post, of which

UK Medical School Graduates 3176 86.2%
European Economic Area Graduates 213 5.8%
Overseas Graduates 296 8.0%

SENIOR HOUSE OFFICER (SHO) POSTS:

These posts are designed to offer basic specialist training in the main specialties.

The minimum duration of an SHO post is six months but many SHO posts are organised into rotations through various specialties. During these posts doctors decide on their broad area of specialisation and entry into early years of specialty experience.

The period spent in SHO posts varies. It must be a minimum of two years, but 3-4 years is common, allowing the doctors to take the first postgraduate qualifications of one of the Royal Colleges.

Nearly all non-EEA doctors will start at SHO level and because of smaller number of SpR posts many of these will spend the whole of their limited period in the UK in this grade.

Entry into the grade is by an equal opportunities competitive process with the degree of competition varying according to the specialty.
