COLLOQUIAL ENGLISH:

Colloquial English is a term given to spoken English used in common speech. It is not the same as Standard English and will differ from region to region.

As you are unlikely to find these phrases in a dictionary, we have tried to illustrate some of these to help you communicate effectively with patients.

She was over the moon when she heard about her PLAB result. delighted
He is going to be in hot water. in trouble
She was beating about the bush. not getting to the point
The long and short of it is... main point
He threw in the towel. gave up
She scored an own goal. made it worse for herself
His mother had passed away. died
She was a bit cheesed off. upset
He was head over heels overjoyed
Once in a blue moon on a rare occasion
Her plans are a pie in the sky. unrealistic
That's like putting the cart before the horse. Doing the 2nd before 1st
She almost had a fit when she found out where he had been. was shocked
He ate like a horse. ate hungrily
She was down in the dumps. depressed
They sent him to Coventry. not talking to him
I have got a frog in my throat. hoarse voice
Her grandmother was hard of hearing. deaf
He decided to pack it in. give up
My child is burning up. has a fever
She's been sick all day. been vomiting
He had the runs. diarrhoea
She blew the fuse. shouted a lot, angry
He had had enough. gave up
She was told to keep her fingers crossed. hope for the best
His father has gone to heaven. died
He left no stone unturned. tried everything
Her grandfather had lost his head. went mad
He ate a lot of junk food. fast food/take-aways
She was stumped. puzzled
He got a yellow card. given a warning
She nicked my pen. stole
I was absolutely knackered. exhausted
She was caught out. found out for cheating
He played his cards right. did the right thing
She had a lot of dope. money/rich
He was pulling my leg. having a joke
She was caught red handed. caught in the act
He was told to mind his P's and Q's. to be careful
He is a couch potato. watching too much TV, sitting on the sofa
Can I have a panel note please? sickness certificate
He was driving me nuts. making me crazy
She is a big shot. important person
It was like a beehive. busy place
She gave a blank look. did not understand
He had a close shave. saved from serious injury
