OWNING A CAR:
You will probably find a car is indispensable in the UK. New cars are expensive, so it will be advisable to purchase a second-hand vehicle. A magazine called Auto Trader (price £1.50) is full of second-hand cars from all over the region. An alternative is to look through the local newspapers or go to a second-hand car dealer.
If you do not know much about cars you should either buy from a well-known dealer and make sure that you get a written guarantee for at least one year or get one of motoring organisations, the Automobile Association (commonly known as AA) or Royal Automobile Club (know as RAC) to carry out an inspection of the car before you buy it. This will probably cost about £100 but is well worth the expense and is a valuable safeguard of your investment in the car.
It is worthwhile buying a Street Atlas (also known as an A to Z) of the city you live in. This will help you find your way around. It is available from bookshops, newsagents and petrol stations.
Driving Licence:
To drive in the UK you must hold a valid driving licence. If you have a driving licence from your own country (International Licence), it can be used in the UK for up to one year. You may be able to exchange your licence for a UK driving licence depending upon the type you hold. For further details you will need to contact the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Longview Road, Swansea, SA6 7JL. Tel: 01792 782 341 Website: http://www.dvla.gov.uk
Car Insurance:
You are legally required to take out a motor insurance policy to provide cover in the event of an accident or your car being stolen. Three types of cover are available - Comprehensive, Third party and Fire & theft. It would be advisable to obtain quotes for the insurance from several companies to ensure you get a good deal. You must not go for the cheapest price only but ensure the company is a reputable one.
Taxation Disc (Road tax):
Every vehicle must display a current Road Tax Disc. This can be purchased from large post offices. You will need to show:
1). A valid insurance certificate
2). An MOT certificate if your car is older than 3 years. (An MOT certificate is a certificate of roadworthiness of the vehicle)
Breakdown Service:
You may wish to consider joining a breakdown service especially if you travel long distances. The main service providers are AA, RAC, Green Flag and National Breakdown.
